Recently after UConn's victory over Butler in the 2011 National Championship, I've had the misfortune to read some of the comments on some ESPN articles that bash head coach, Jim Calhoun and talk about how he cheated, doesn't deserve this title, about how this title will get vacated later, etc.
I just want to point out why Calhoun is not a cheater and why you won't see this title vacated. First off, until this year, Calhoun has never been reprimanded for NCAA violations and the violations UConn was cited for this year had nothing to do with Calhoun actually doing anything. It was someone on his staff who no longer works for the university giving illegal benefits to recruit, Nate Miles, which Calhoun did not know anything about. Calhoun has never given any reason to doubt his integrity, so there's no valid reason to believe he's lying about that. Secondly, Nate Miles never actually played in a single game for UConn, so there's no reason to think the 2011 title will get vacated. Calhoun is no John Calipari, who has had his 2 Final 4 appearances vacated at both UMass and Memphis. Nate Miles is no Derrick Rose, who played ineligibly for Memphis under Calipari by having someone else take his SATs for him. So, how did Calhoun cheat? I think his 3rd title is here to stay.
